How to Create your First Programming Course with AlterClass

AlterClass is the simplest way to create an interactive programming course online. With the AlterClass authoring system, you can compose your lessons using several content block types, group your lessons into sections, pre-sell your course, and more.

In this article, we will cover:

How to create a new course

Start by navigating to your Instructor Dashboard from the menu.

You can also create a new course from the Courses tab of your instructor dashboard.

User menu

Then, click on the Create course button (or press 'N' on your keyboard).

Create a new course

You should now see the course creation page where you can enter the title of your new course and a short description, upload a cover image, set the original price of your course, and decide to sell your course at a discounted price.

If you are not sure about any of those details at this point, don't worry as you can change everything later.

The course creation page

When you are done, click on the Create course button, and you are ready to start working on the content of your course.

Organize your course content

Alright, you have your new course set up. Now, you can start creating the lessons of your course and organizing them into sections to make it easier for your students to learn one concept at a time.

To create a section, click on the Add a section button from the sidebar on the left.

Add a section

From there, you can add a lesson to a section by hovering the mouse over the section's name. You can add as many lessons as you want.

Note that every change you make to your course is automatically saved.

Add a lesson

And if you want to get rid of a lesson or a section, click on the trash icon by hovering your mouse over the lesson's name or the section's name, respectively from the sidebar.

Once you have created a lesson, you can start editing its content on the right part of your screen. From there, you can update the title of the selected lesson and compose it by dropping content blocks from the sidebar.

Use content blocks

Again, you can add as many content blocks as you want to create your lesson, and mix-and-match between Markdown, quiz, code-snippet, CodeSandbox/StackBlitz embed, YouTube video, and more.
